Not many players have stadia named after them - and particularly not when the stadium in question is shared by two of the world’s biggest clubs, and he played meaningfully for only one of them.
But Giuseppe Meazza was the key to Italy’s two World Cup victories in the thirties, and on his death in 1979, it was accepted by both Internazionale and AC Milan that the San Siro should bear his name - testimony indeed to the importance of the inside-forward to the Azzurri.
Meazza, nicknamed “Peppino“, joined Inter as a 17-year-old in 1927, and promptly made his mark, banging in 33 goals as a centre-forward the following season. He finished as the league’s top-scorer in 1929-30 - the first year of a professional and nationwide Serie A - with 31 goals in 33 games.
Further capocanonieri titles followed in 1935-36 and 1937-38; only Gunnar Nordahl has taken the title more often.
Meazza also made his international debut in that 1929-30 season, scoring twice in a 4-2 victory over Switzerland. He confirmed his potential by helping himself to a hat-trick later that year in a 5-0 demolition of Hungary.
Meazza remained a fixture of the Italy side until the War, but it was when coach Vittorio Pozzo switched him to inside forward that Meazza’s career really took off. He played an important role in the 1934 World Cup triumph, scoring in the 7-1 first round demolition of the USA, and heading the winner against Spain in the second round.
And in extra-time in the final, it was a limping Meazza who whipped in the cross for Guaita to tee up Schiavio for the winner.
Meazza then captained the side to the trophy for a second time four years later in France, along with his fellow inside forward Ferrari, the only survivor from the champions of 1934.
He scored just once - the decisive penalty in the 2-1 win over Brazil in the semi-final; moments later, his shorts, ripped by a Brazilian challenge, fell down. In the final, he laid on the second for Piola, and the third for Colaussi.
Impudence was Meazza’s watchword, and he became noted for his ability to sidestep goalkeepers in one-on-one situations. In total, Meazza scored 33 goals in 53 international appearances, a total that was surpassed only by the great Luigi Riva.
Shortly after that triumph in Paris, though, Meazza suffered serious injury, which effectively ended his career. He joined AC Milan in 1939, but made only occasional appearances before the War forced the suspension of the league in 1942. During the War he guested for Juventus, Varese and Atalanta, before he returned to the San Siro in 1946-47 as player-coach.

Giuseppe Bergomi was born in Milan and devoted his entire career to his beloved Internazionale. This central defender or right-back blossomed early and broke into the first team already during the 1980/81 season as a 17 year-old. He was soon acknowledged by national team coach Enzo Bearzot and was included in the 1982 World Cup squad having barely played 30 senior matches in the Italian league.
Bergomi started the tournament on the bench, but came on as a substitute against Brazil in the memorable 3-2 second phase win. He did a great job and was included in the starting line-up against Poland in the semifinal because Gentile was suspended. Everyone was impressed with how mature he played and Bearzot could not drop him for the final against West Germany.
